Planning for the future of Virginia Key

What Should go in the Rusty Pelican Area?

The consultants for the city of Miami have called for the Rusty Pelican to be converted to some kind of an event space or stage. What does that mean? We are concerned that that may not be well thought out or that it is merely another event stage for coommerciali development. What do you think should go there? Should the Rusty pelican or an upgraded version of it stay there?

North Point Area

How many people have seen the north point area of Virginia Key? Beyond Jimbos. Beyond the Sewage Treatment plant. I had never seen it before the other day when I was stunned at the possibilities of the place. It involves tens of acres of land that are being restored by county efforts. It could make a stunning park, possibnility mnountain bike trails, beaches and other amenities for a city that has so little park space.

Check out the EDSA website.

EDSA, the firm contracted to re-do the master plan of Virginia Key has put information up on their website. Take a look and post some forum topics here! Let us know what you think.

What happened to the idea of having a Biscayne Trail?

What happened to this idea? Of creating more trails through Virginia Key for bicyclists? There was even mention of turning the landfill into an off road biking area. They said DERM would help clean it up. Check out the article below I got off of the miamidade.gov website, look at pg.2. Please tell me what happened, this idea sounds great!

Should Virginia Key Beach become part of the National Park System?

Is Virginia Key Beach of great national historical significance? It was the first segregated beach that African-Americans were allowed to use in the Miami area beginning in 1945 after a civil rights demonstration.  Why has this been overlooked in our nation's history?  How important is this?

Should it become part of the National Park System perhaps as a northern terminus for Biscayne National Park along with the Miami Circle?  What do you think?

Creating Documentaries About Virginia Key

New documentaries need to be made about the Marine Stadium site, and other areas on Virginia Key.  The technology makes it easier and easier to do it.  Many of the background research tools can be found in the Florida Room of the Miami Dade Public Library as well as the Historical Museum of Southern Florida.
